Volunteering for Second Harvest Heartland
About Second Harvest Heartland
Second Harvest Heartland’s Mission
In Minnesota alone, 1 in 11 households are affected by hunger. Last year, Second Harvest Heartland helped alleviate some of that hunger by distributing 89 million meals to nearly 1,000 food shelves, pantries and other partner programs. The help that Second Harvest Heartland provides allows our Minnesota neighbors to find their next meal so that they can thrive at work, in the classroom and in their communities. Thanks to their wide network of partners, volunteers and donors, 532,000 people received meals last year and were able to ease the worry of figuring out how to feed themselves and/or their families.
Our Volunteer Experience
A team of 13 General Office Products employees volunteered at Second Harvest Heartland. We really enjoyed their volunteer experience and contributing toward their incredible mission to feed our hungry neighbors. We got their brief presentation on their organization, washed our hands, got our stylish hairnets on and got to work.
Our task for the day was re-packaging bulk bags of pasta to smaller bags for easier distribution. They had us work in groups of 4-5 people at each station; portioning, sealing, labeling and packing. We were just one group among several other volunteers from other companies and schools giving their time.
In the 2 hours we spent on the warehouse floor, we packaged a total of 2,391 pounds of pasta!
Second Harvest Heartland holds a special place in our hearts; we are working on their new facility in Brooklyn Park, due to complete in Spring 2020. Their existing space has been serving them for the past 30 years, and they’ve recognized a need to renovate and rethink their building so it can feed more neighbors, more effectively. We are honored to be working with Leo A Daly to furnish their nearly 50,000 square foot office space.
Thank you to everyone at Second Harvest Heartland for giving our team the opportunity to be a part of the mission to end hunger!
